Carved from a single block of jade, the statue was discovered in 1464 when a bolt of lightning hit a decorative stucco coating in a temple to reveal the jade underneath it. Local legends note that Hindu demigods Vishnu and Indra created the statuette under the prediction that Buddha would provide five lands with religion. Nestled in the historic center of the city, the temple is viewed with great respect and reverence, as it remains to be one of Thailand’s most sacred temples.
