Opposites attract in Japan—ancient traditions fuse with advanced technology while minimalism meets kitsch
Japan
The best places to eat sushi in Tokyo if you are a gaijin and don't mind paying for quality
Awesome sushi full of drunk Japanese businessmen. Go with the omakase and you won't regret it
8-7-6 Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Awesome and really interesting sushi that will be different from what you have had elsewhere. WARNING - this guy serves whale. It tastes like tuna and is not worth killing and eating a sentient creature for. I recommend passing and asking him to skip it. Don't bother debating it as sometimes cultures just do things differently and you won't win, but the fish is worth the nightmares
Fourth Floor, Ginza 745 Building 7-4-5, Ginza, Chuo-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Awesome sushi and very entertaining dinner talk with the maestro
4-2-6 Minamiaoyana Building 426, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
A good riff on the Ginza Kyubey but more low key for a quiet gustatory delight
Hotel Okura Tokyo, 2-10-4 Toranomon, Minamoto-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Awesome ramen. Not everything can be sushi
First Floor, Second Odagiri Building, 4-9-11 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Great food and a great show, at a not-so-great price, but a key start to any night in Roppongi
4-10-11 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Amazing and interesting yakitori
4-2-6 Nishiazabu, Minato, Tokyo, Japan
Awesome family-run tempura joint
4-11-4 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
More ramen. This one offers a very different twist from your traditional ramen
1-4-36 Nishiazabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Can anyone help me meet a member here? I am adding it to my list so I don't forget to try. I have heard good things but this is the only place whose food I can't speak to personally.... yet
Ark Hills South Tower, 1-4-5 Roppongi, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Japanese baseball is somehow more fun than other baseball. It must be all the songs and drunk men shouting "banzai"
1 Chome-3-61 Koraku, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan
Solid Beatles tribute bar right by Inakaya

It's good to be the king
1-1 Chiyoda, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan 100-8111
Stay at an onsen hotel here before or after climbing Fuji-san. Don’t be intimidated: the climb is easy enough, but the crowds are brutal if you are unlucky.
Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan
Nice, relaxed Teppanyaki spot. A picture on the wall of Michael Jackson visiting raises the question of whether we can all stop hating MJ yet and enjoy the music or if he is still a monster. Debate it over dinner. Still can’t match Benihana’s showmanship
Very good food and a great bargain relative to the average Tokyo sushi spot. Father and sons team. Popular with the Japanese rugby team apparently.
Japan, 〒106-0031 Tōkyō-to, Minato City, Nishiazabu, 1-chōme−4−40 篠ビル B1F
Sorry to deviate from Tokyo, but I wanted to note this one. Good yakitori in a nice setting at a great price. Yakitori value-for-money blows sushi out of the water
Japan, 〒604-0826 Kyoto, Nakagyō-ku, Hiiragichō,
Down an alley, down an alley, and upstairs in a nondescript location in Tsukiji, this was excellent, and I will stress excellent, sushi. Furthermore, if Sushi Kan is quality for about half the price of a typical high end meal, this was half of Kan’s price again. The first good sushi meal that will actually leave you full. I recommend taking advantage of your jet lag, starting your day at dawn and then stopping here for an early rush to beat the crowd.
Japan, 〒104-0045 Tōkyō-to, Chuo City, Tsukiji, 4-chōme−10−16 四丁目町会ビル 1F
Delicious and unique experience, but they take a slice of your wallet too. Worth it though if you have the means and the opportunity. Really a special dinner.
2-chōme-1-1 Nihonbashimuromachi, Chuo City, Tōkyō-to 103-0022, Japan
Excellent soba in a great setting in the heart of Kamakura
4-chōme-10-3 Yuigahama, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0014, Japan
Another good value play in sushi
Japan, 〒104-0061 Tōkyō-to, Chuo City, Ginza, 3-chōme−8−15 銀座中央ビル 1F
Good and different food. Self-reportedly praised by Eiji Yoshikawa himself which is what got me in the door. A new taste variety for me, and I’m glad I experienced it.
Japan, 〒605-0071 Kyoto, Higashiyama-ku,
Not a value play, but you need to stop by an eel place at least once per trip. Those are the rules.
1 Chome-5 Nihonbashimuromachi, Chuo City, Tokyo 103-0022, Japan
Great tempura, at an almost criminal value. Worth the wait.
