Kyubey (Ginza)

キュウベエ

5 saves

Awesome sushi full of drunk Japanese businessmen. Go with the omakase and you won't regret it

More details

Awesome and really interesting sushi that will be different from what you have had elsewhere. WARNING - this guy serves whale. It tastes like tuna and is not worth killing and eating a sentient creature for. I recommend passing and asking him to skip it. Don't bother debating it as sometimes cultures just do things differently and you won't win, but the fish is worth the nightmares

Awesome sushi and very entertaining dinner talk with the maestro

Kyubey (Hotel Okura)

A good riff on the Ginza Kyubey but more low key for a quiet gustatory delight

Awesome ramen. Not everything can be sushi

More details

Great food and a great show, at a not-so-great price, but a key start to any night in Roppongi

Can anyone help me meet a member here? I am adding it to my list so I don't forget to try. I have heard good things but this is the only place whose food I can't speak to personally.... yet

Japanese baseball is somehow more fun than other baseball. It must be all the songs and drunk men shouting "banzai"

Kōfu, Japan • Recommendation •

Stay at an onsen hotel here before or after climbing Fuji-san. Don’t be intimidated: the climb is easy enough, but the crowds are brutal if you are unlucky.

  • Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan

Tokyo, Japan • Recommendation •

Nice, relaxed Teppanyaki spot. A picture on the wall of Michael Jackson visiting raises the question of whether we can all stop hating MJ yet and enjoy the music or if he is still a monster. Debate it over dinner. Still can’t match Benihana’s showmanship

Very good food and a great bargain relative to the average Tokyo sushi spot. Father and sons team. Popular with the Japanese rugby team apparently.

Sorry to deviate from Tokyo, but I wanted to note this one. Good yakitori in a nice setting at a great price. Yakitori value-for-money blows sushi out of the water

Tsukiji Itadori Bekkan

2 saves

Tokyo, Japan • Recommendation •

Down an alley, down an alley, and upstairs in a nondescript location in Tsukiji, this was excellent, and I will stress excellent, sushi. Furthermore, if Sushi Kan is quality for about half the price of a typical high end meal, this was half of Kan’s price again. The first good sushi meal that will actually leave you full. I recommend taking advantage of your jet lag, starting your day at dawn and then stopping here for an early rush to beat the crowd.
