Hidden Foodie Spots in Paris

Paris, Boulogne-Billancourt

During our one-week stay in Paris, France, in June 2019, my brother and I had the chance to immerse ourselves in the culture and the culinary scene of the City of Light. Prior to the trip, I did a lot of research regarding the must-try restaurants that were near the museums that we visited. However, there were times when we happened to find a restaurant through sheer serendipity, and these resulted in some of our most memorable meals during our three-week sojourn all over Europe.

Our noses led us to this hole-in-the-wall restaurant located in the 11th arrondissement (district) of Paris. On that day, we spent hours admiring the works of Vincent Van Gogh at the all-digital art museum in Paris called Atelier des Lumières. The vibrant paintings of Van Gogh were projected with 360° views inside the venue, providing an immersive and interactive experience for everyone. We left the venue with our eyes full of wonder but our stomachs were grumbling since it was already way past two o'clock. While walking towards a Metro station, we were attracted to the delicious scent of spices in the air. We immediately sat down and asked the waiter about the dishes ordered by the customers at the next table. We got a crash course on Moroccan cuisine as he explained that it was chicken tagine, a stew made with braised chicken, turmeric, garlic, saffron, ginger, paprika, and cumin. My brother ordered this hearty dish that was slow-cooked to perfection. When I picked Moroccan chicken with couscous, I was not prepared for the explosion of flavors in my mouth as I tasted this spice-laden dish. The chicken was fork-tender and the couscous was perfectly fluffy. To this day, I consider this as the best meal I have had in my life and fueled my desire to visit Morocco in the future.

The melted cheese dish from Lux Bar has been haunting my dreams ever since I tried it that warm, summer day. Le Camembert Roti is baked Camembert that smells divine when placed in front of you piping hot with a bubbly cheese crust on top. This savory dish is made even more decadent with the addition of crème fraiche or heavy cream made with buttermilk. You'll want to scoop up every drop with the crusty baguette slices served with this cheesy concoction. With a price tag of 8.50 Euros (less than P500 pesos), Le Camembert Roti is a savory treat that deserves to be in your foodie bucket list.

After visiting the Louvre Museum, I would suggest that you visit Bistrot Victoires for reasonably priced meals. I highly recommend trying the duck confit, which comes with a leg of duck with crispy skin and incredibly tender meat. The wonderfully seasoned potato slices and accompanying side salad will provide you with enough fuel for several more hours of sightseeing.

We couldn't leave France without trying the local delicacy: escargot or snails. The snails were tender and tasty morsels while the accompanying green sauce is actually garlic-parsley butter that is extremely addicting. On its own, the pesto-like sauce is also great paired with crusty French bread.

If you miss eating rice while spending time in the land of baguettes and croissants, head to Moilun Dore. Look for the Chinese restaurant located near the Moulin Rouge. You can't miss the red sign saying "Traiteur Chinois," which translates to Chinese delicatessen. You can pick from a wide variety of dishes such as sweet and sour pork to katsudon to tempura.

One of the things I miss most about Paris is the fact that there are fruit stands everywhere where you can buy fruits such as peaches, cherries, and berries. I love munching on fresh raspberries and blueberries bought from friendly neighborhood stores instead of eating the frozen berries usually found in Manila.
