The island of Nusa Penida is home to some of the most breathtaking scenes in all of Bali. Atuh Beach is one of its best-kept secrets. Its far-flung and isolated location means that you’re likely to have the beach all to yourself. Take all the time you need to recenter! Get in touch with nature as you marvel at the towering cliffs, impressive limestone rock formations (one in particular even has an arch-like structure), and sparkling turquoise waters.

Kelingking Beach is another Nusa Penida gem that’s been receiving a lot of well-deserved attention. It’s famous for its unique headland that resembles a Tyrannosaurus Rex, hence the nickname “T-Rex Bay.” Just like Atuh Beach, Kelingking is so secluded that getting here may be challenging. The trip usually involves riding a boat, renting a motorbike or a private car, and a bit of trekking. The paths here are rougher, and the cliffs are steeper, so be extra careful! All the trouble will be worth it once you see the jaw-dropping seascape of the Indian Ocean.

Our last Nusa Penida recommendation goes to Angel’s Billabong, well-known for its natural infinity pool. Compared to the first two places we mentioned, Angel’s Billabong is more frequented by tourists. Don’t fret, though—you’ll still be able to get some alone time with the lagoon as long as you start your day early. Check the tide first before taking a dip. You wouldn’t want to run into sharp rocks in the middle of a relaxing swim!

Make your way to northern Ubud to discover the wonders of the Tegallalang Rice Terraces. Considered to be one of Bali’s most iconic spots, it features a traditional Balinese irrigation system called the “subak.” Water flows continuously in between the rice paddies, so try not to slip since it gets very muddy here! When you’re done exploring, head to one of the restaurants or coffee shops nearby. Get a seat overlooking the glorious landscape, and enjoy the view over a cup of Balinese coffee.

The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces offer respite from all the tourist noise since it’s off the beaten path. Its name comes from two words: “Jati” (real) and “Luwih” (good or beautiful), so you’re in for quite a treat! The large expanse consists of over 600 hectares of magnificent rice fields, also maintained by the subak. Feel the gentle breeze as you take in the panoramic sights and vibrant foliage. Here, it’s just you and nature—except occasionally a few farmers and in-the-know visitors.

It’s time to bust out your hiking gear! Mount Batur is a 1,717-meter gift to adventurous travelers and adrenaline junkies. Begin your journey before dawn, since it will take you about two hours to reach the top. The trail is steep, rocky, and slippery, so always tread lightly and cautiously. Take breaks if you have to. Once you’re at the summit, you’ll come face-to-face with the glistening orange sunrise. We’ve also been told that from here, you’ll get to see other volcanoes like Mount Agung!

Ubud also has something special for first-time hikers and leisure walkers! Campuhan Ridge Walk is a nine-kilometer trek that lets you savor the fresh air and vast greenery, away from the hustle and bustle of the town center. During your walk, you’ll encounter temples, carved walls, intricate shrines, and green slopes. It’s the perfect opportunity to experience the laid-back side of Ubud! On your way back, head to the main road and indulge in a traditional Balinese massage to soothe the senses.
