Enter the world of China’s royalty at the Forbidden City, the largest palace complex in the world! It became the home of 24 emperors throughout the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Inside the compound, there are about 800 buildings and more than 9,000 rooms! It will take days to fully explore the place, but the key attractions should only take a few hours if you stick to the Central Axis. Must-see’s include the Gate of Heavenly Peace for a spectacular view of Tiananmen Square; the Hall of Supreme Harmony, which held various royal celebrations; and the Imperial Garden, where you’ll encounter 400-year-old trees.
