West Lake is Hangzhou’s pride and symbol. Lush willow trees, pagoda-topped hills, and man-made islands surround the freshwater lake. Take in the serene atmosphere at any of the Ten Scenes of West Lake, such as Dawn on the Su Causeway in Spring, Curved Yard and Lotus Pool in Summer, and Moon Over the Peaceful Lake in Autumn. These spots give you the greatest views of the landscape! Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, West Lake has greatly inspired poets and painters throughout Chinese history—the most notable being Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo when he compared West Lake’s splendor to Xi Zi, one of the four ancient beauties of China.

Also known as the Temple of the Soul’s Retreat, Lingyin Temple is one of the largest and oldest Buddhist temples in China. It was built around 326 to 328 AD by an Indian monk named Huili who, after exploring Hangzhou, became enchanted by the land. Join pilgrims as you scour the temple’s different halls. Enter the Hall of Four Heavenly Kings to encounter the statue of the Laughing Buddha; then, make your way towards the Mahavira Hall where Gautama Buddha sits majestically on a lotus throne. Remember: no flash photography allowed!

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life in China’s first national wetland park! Located west of Hangzhou, Xixi Wetland Park is frequented by tourists for its vast waterscapes and tranquil vistas. Recharge amongst picturesque attractions, which include a quaint fisher’s village, a villa bursting with plum blossoms, and a bamboo cottage. Plan your trips accordingly as Xixi Wetland Park also hosts various cultural events. The Xixi Flower Fair Festival is held every February 15th of the Chinese lunar year, while the Dragon Boat Festival takes place every May 5th.

Get a feel of the olden days at Qinghefang Ancient Street—the best-preserved area in all of ancient Hangzhou. Its history dates all the way back to the Qing Dynasty when it was considered to be the main political, cultural, and commercial hub of the city. Now, it still is home to a significant amount of antique buildings and long-standing establishments. The legendary street is also dotted shops hawking all sorts of handicrafts, artworks, and even traditional Chinese medicine.
