The margarita has long been tied to Mexican culture since its invention in 1942, but the modern frozen version of the tequila classic can easily be traced to Dallas. Mariano Martinez came up with the idea 50 years ago after popping by a 7-Eleven and seeing a Slurpee machine make a consistently cold and perfectly mixed drink at the pull of a lever. It was the best solution to the mixology required to whip up good margaritas every single time—and mankind never looked back. Half a century later, we revisit the home of the frozen margarita and chill with the new honchos who are killin’ the game in Dallas!
Before we introduce you to the young ’uns, we have to pay respects to the OG. Although the original machine is now on display in the Smithsonian, Mariano’s Hacienda Ranch still serves up tasty glasses of frozen margarita in traditional flavors along with a few new ones like jalapeño for that irresistible hot and cold sensation.
