Thrift Fix

Hong Kong, Online

Whether you’re a thrift virgin or a bargain veteran, you may still encounter fabric overload in Mong Kok. It requires patience to go through the area’s small shops, all overflowing with vintage and pre-loved pieces. Sometimes, thrifting efforts can prove fruitless, especially if the products seem tatty, but these shops around Hong Kong offer second-hand goods that are still as good as new.

Green Ladies - Wanchai C C Wu Branch

3 saves

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

With a commitment to abolish fast fashion and uphold feminism, Green Ladies is all about environmental and social justice. The staff is comprised of middle-aged women who are all very capable but may have received fewer career opportunities than their male counterparts. Unlike quite a few second-hand stores, they encourage you to try the clothes on before you buy them to ensure that you will use them instead of wasting them! The products are in such pristine condition that you will walk into the store feeling as if it’s any ol’ store in the mall—except cooler.

Salvation Army family store

2 saves

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

Run by The Salvation Army, the net proceeds of the Family Store all go to funding their programs to help those in need. All the clothes have been recycled or donated by organizations and the public, but they are certainly in good condition. The products available cater more towards children and parents, with a wide range of kids’ outfits and toys. Don’t expect this to be on par with the likes of big name stores, but buying what you need here would be much more meaningful.

Sun & Moon(皇后大道中)

1 save

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

There are a few branches of Sun & Moon spread across Hong Kong, all of which are similar. Piles and piles of clothing are arranged on spinning racks, sometimes packed so densely that you may be unable to walk freely around the store. However, the sheer amount of different clothing means that there is something for everyone. Once something has caught your eye, be sure to check it out in the mirror. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to try it on, so don’t rush a purchase!

Stanley Market

赤柱市集

2 saves

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

One of the biggest outdoor markets in Hong Kong, Stanley Market is as much of a tourist attraction as it is a place to quench your hoarding habits. You can find almost anything here—from the essentials to the frivolous to the insane. (Triple-fused pentaminx 17x17x17 Rubik’s cubes, anyone?) Not everything is second-hand, but some items are recycled while some are handmade. The prices start off low, so there’s no need to play limbo. The area is a hotspot for pickpockets, though, so be careful!

Hipster 9

2 saves

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

This hole-in-the-wall vintage shop is anything but drab. With its bright yellow exterior, you can’t miss it. Hipster 9 is meant for those going against the status quo. It is a little more expensive than your typical second-hand store, but the items make up for it. The accessories and jewelry are luxurious and high-quality, passed down from wealthy owners of the past. You’ll find almost none of these snazzy styles and outfits at a mainstream fashion store.

InBetween

2 saves

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

InBetween is an independent antique store tucked away in between two walls, making it harder to find but also making it a real hidden gem especially with its delightful name. You will find vintage posters, ornate outfits, and quirky little bits and bobs here. Many of the products are made by artists and designers, making them one of a kind. Be prepared to shell out some dough, as these aged items increase in value over time. InBetween was at risk of closing in September 2019, but is now open again for the weekends despite the odds.

1ofaKind

Hong Kong, China • Recommendation •

True to its name, 1ofaKind is the first clothing store and cafe in Hong Kong catering specifically to homeless people. The idea is that you should pay what you can, which is a great concept to aid those in need of a hot meal. They also only employ the homeless. The shop itself is trendy and quirky, while the clothes and accessories are super retro.
