Aizome (藍染め, indigo dyeing) is a Japanese tradition that dates back to the Nara period (AD 710 to 794). Fortunately, Wanariya keeps the custom alive by holding classes where you’re guided to create your own indigo-dyed products. The best part is that you get to take your masterpieces home, making for a great handmade souvenir! Book a few weeks in advance to secure a slot. Wanariya also has a retail shop near Asakusa Station, in case you’re out of time and still want to get your hands on beautiful aizome garments!
