Ipswich, Cambridge
Yes, that is the name of this market town, once a very important pilgrimage site to the shrine of Anglo Saxon king, St Edmund We are staying visiting for three days and exploring the town and further afield in the county of Suffolk. NB St Edmund is patron saint of pandemics
Good little museum in the centre of Bury st Edmunds, which was housing a very surprising exhibition of street art when we went. Top names such as Banksy and Tracey Emin. Quite incongruous! How did a small provincial museum secure this?

National Trust property and garden. Good frontage. Check out the STUMPERY in the garden best. New word and new concept for me. Also suggest you read a bit about the disreputable 20 th century owners! Access to inside was limited by Covid restrictions.. no doubt better normally. Lunch in cafe acceptable but not exciting.

Upmarket seaside town on the Suffolk coast with artistic and musical connections. I am standing on the beach in front of an impressive sculpture by Maggi Hambling. Benjamin Britten famously lived here and the annual Aldeburgh festival takes place at nearby Snape Maltings. See separate entry.

The castle walls are all intact but the central portion, the castle itself, is demolished. It still offers very good walk round the top of the walls and has events in the space beneath. The Norman battlements were embellished in Tudor times by a series of decorative chimneys. Worthy of Gaudi ! Good exhibition about castle history

I really warmed to this place. On the spacious site of a former maltings, this has a concert hall and festival site, world class sculpture, lovely looking self catering accommodation, specialist shops and galleries all in a splendid countryside setting. Note the excellent seafood platter which I ate in the Riverside restaurant with a view across the reed beds. I want to return for some music.

Excellent walking tour of Bury St Edmunds was perfect introduction to this lovely market town. (£7.50 each) St Edmund was an Anglo Saxon king and martyr who was patron saint of England before St George muscled in. He remains the patron saint of pandemics. photos show him, The Angel Inn, where Dickens stayed and the splendid cathedral

In Bury St Edmunds town centre. I wanted to go for breakfast which everyone speaks very highly of, but this did not suit our schedule, so instead had very generously filled toasted sandwich and excellent carrot cake for lunch. Full of happy locals. I can see why. Good food, generous portions, very friendly service
