Beautiful gardens near Horsham. They have been closed to the public for about the last 10 years but have recently reopened, having been restored to their former glory. Bonus is The Doll’s House exhibition, which did not sound my sort of thing , but was actually amazing. More of a model village really. Fairly limited food menu in cafes and an upmarket restaurant, which I did not try. But you go for the gardens especially in Spring.
Leonardslee Gardens, Brighton Rd, Lower Beeding, Horsham RH13 6PP, UK
Kew in the country. Owned jointly by the National Trust and Kew gardens. Especially beautiful in Spring with daffodils and later the rhododendrons. Superb walks. Great big outdoor Christmas tree at Xmas. Millennium seedbank for the science buffs.
Selsfield Rd, Haywards Heath RH17 6TN, UK
Very popular National Trust gardens in West Sussex. Small interior only as original house belonging to the Messel family was damaged by fire. But the gardens are stunning. Famous herbaceous borders. I love the heather garden. They often have children’s trails eg the snow dog pictured! Pleasant tea room.
Staplefield Lane, Handcross RH17 6EB, UK
National Trust house with excellent Arts and Crafts interior. William Morris designs. Small but very well presented gardens. Nice cup of tea and cakes available! Highly thought of Christmas trail for children in December.

An unassuming little cafe tucked away in a quiet little road in the middle of Chichester is highly recommended for its tasty homemade food. My cheese and bacon omelette was delicious and the others’ triple decker toasted sandwiches with plentiful garnish went down a treat. Only open in the daytime. This is a cafe not a restaurant but it is a jolly good one. NB it is in Chichester not Portsmouth

A vegan restaurant in Crawley! Now, I confess to liking fish and meat but I have heard very good reports of this new restaurant in the untrendy town of Crawley ( my home town) and intend to give it a try! Update January 2020 Yes it is as good as the hype. I had an excellent Thai vegetable curry, tasty and plentiful plus mango juice. All well presented and Really friendly service too.

Country pub only a few miles from Crawley which makes a big effort with food. Lunch today, an abnormally hot day for England, pictured. Roasted vegetables and home made potato gnocchi excellent.
Lambs Green Rd, Lambs Green, Horsham RH12 4RG, UK
Award winning pub in village of Rusper. Traditional pub food plus a variety of Greek meals. My friend and I both chose Kleftiko, the slow roasted lamb shoulder. It was excellent BUT beware... it is large. We would have been better sharing it and left room for a pud!

Authentic Sicilian restaurant on Crawley High St. Good food, friendly service.

Nothing amazing in appearance to attract you in but glad we did go in! Food quality was high. I chose a roasted fig salad because the name of the establishment suggested they might know a thing or two about figs! And they did... excellent combination of figs, walnuts ,goats cheese and rocket. Good smoothie. Others spoke highly of the breakfasts. Service friendly and efficient.

This is actually East Sussex. A nursery and a private garden, open to the public. Very quiet and peaceful, somewhat wild (ie only go if you like things a bit weedy and overgrown). Nice old fashioned tea shop. We sat in the garden but inside there were settees in a little library.
