I've been stuck in Bangkok under lockdown for the last 11 months. With borders closed, it's a great time to experience domestic tourism when there are few tourists around! So we took a flight down to Phuket and checked into the Renaissance Phuket Resort and Spa for a week.

2It's the sign of a good hotel when the GM introduces himself at breakfast. It's the sign of a great hotel when you spy him later picking up random leaves that strayed onto a path. When the management cares enough about the little things it flows down to the rest of the staff. With Phuket closed to international tourists, the hotel was of course very quiet but the staff throughout provided impeccable service. We were upgraded to one of the very cool private villas with a plunge pool, perfect for your next Instagram shoot! When you are captive on a resort like this the prices of food and drink can often be heavily inflated so it was a refreshing change the prices seemed very normal, eg 60 baht for a coke, 90 baht for a coffee, and water is free every where.

Currently only open for a buffet breakfast, there's an excellent spread each morning and you can eat inside or out. Ask nicely and the staff will take your kids to feed the fish!

Bar and western restaurant close to the sea. Lovely sunset views. Happy hour is extended to 9pm on weekends. The name is very accurate, the floor of the restaurant is made of sand, so my daughter could happily play with her bucket and spade while I had a cocktail! The bartenders can make a good espresso martini if you ask :)

2The signature Thai restaurant of the resort, with air conditioning on the second floor above Sandbox. Excellent Thai food including fried seabass and a mango sticky rice inspired cocktail. Kid friendly, you can also order off the Sandbox menu and vice versa.

Even if you aren't getting a massage you should peep inside to check out the impressive architecture of the spa based around a circular fish filled pool.

2Beautiful beach facing wear towards the Indian Ocean, so you get amazing sunsets! The waves are fierce with warnings of riptides so you will want to stick to swimming in the pool.
