The 7,107 islands of the Pearl of the Orient Seas boast of cultures, language, sounds, and sights that are as lively as its people

A little back story: My undergraduate thesis is actually a cultural study about Cubao and how it became a transitory juncture, how the place constantly changes but its unspoken purpose as a center of everything does not. Cubao is an amalgamation of a lot of things, it's many things at once. It's not glamorous. But its grit makes it a favorite by many. Here's a list that proves exactly all that. (The title of this list is named after Tony Perez's collection of stories. He has written so many accounts on Cubao, and he is the inspiration behind my study.)
I love thrift shopping. I would say 60% of my clothes are pre-loved. You will find so many hidden gems lurking around the green hangers of Fashion Delite. It's a big secondhand clothing store and they have two branches in Cubao. I suggest you visit during a sale because their regular prices can be quite expensive compared to other thrift shops around the metro.

Walking the streets of C. Benitez is highly suggested if you feel like walking around, and just take in things that overwhelm you. Served me well.

Nightlife is never dead at Manhattan Parkway. Here you will find bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and convenience stores all in one long strand. It's like there's always an ongoing street party where everyone is welcome to join. I love walking here after hours.

A Cubao local probably has her own Cubao Expo favourite, but mine will always be Fred's. Some of the best stories ever told to me by friends were told here. I always stay at the table outside near Bellini's and the giant plant pot. It's the best spot!

When you go hungry in Cubao, it's best to head to Chopstick House for affordable Chinese food. They have plenty of options and meal variations, making their menu easily adjust to your budget! My favorite is their lumpiang shanghai meal. It comes with their classic house blend too.

With the rise of new buildings and shopping centres around Cubao, Isetann is probably receiving less visits. But I found really interesting keepsakes when I visited the first time. From fruit hairclips, to quirky socks. Who knows what else you can find in here!

This is my favorite antique store in Cubao Expo. 💖 They sell old print ads, rare toys, random trinkets, and limited artworks by local artists as well as the store owners. 📷: Chen Villanueva

Never have I set foot in another optical shop when I found Perez Optical. They have your glasses fixed for a very reasonable price, and cheaper compared to others. Dr. Perez is one entertaining optometrist. One time, he recited Shylock's defense when he found out that I took a Literature degree. 😂 (This is the only photo that they have online)
