In the Middle of the (Jakartan) Day

Jakarta, South Tangerang

It’s essential for any working body to take breaks during the day. My favorite “me time” during the daily grind is lunch, when I get to refuel for what’s to come in the remaining hours of the day. I have a couple of usual restaurants that my stomach has called its midday home; and I’m happy to share them all with you!

On days when I crave for something wholesome, I make a beeline for Salad Stop. The healthy fast food chain spoils you for choice with its do-it-yourself salad bar, which features plenty of greens, toppings, and dressings. They also have set menu of classic and signature salads, in case you’re a bit overwhelmed.

Berrywell is another healthy cafe in the city specializing in delicious smoothie bowls. Pop in for a refreshing lunch, paired with one of their cold-pressed juices. Go ahead and have some dessert—they’re of the guilt-free kind anyway!

Lewis and Carroll

Jakarta, Indonesia • Recommendation •

When Lewis and Carroll opened up a few years ago, they made a splash with their artisanal tea blends. While their brews are exquisite, what keeps me coming back for lunch are their delectable plates of fried rice! Choose between oxtail, tiger prawn, salmon, chicken, and Australian tenderloin to go with your well-seasoned, golden brown nasi goreng-style (Indonesian stir-fried rice) dish.

Kafe Betawi (Pondok Indah Mall)

South Tangerang, Indonesia • Recommendation •

Kafe Betawi, whose name literally translates to “native Jakarta,” serves Indonesian street food in a casual restaurant setting. Come for the nasi goreng and mie goreng (Indonesian stir-fried noodles), soto betawi (beef soup with coconut milk), kue rangi (grilled cake made of tapioca flour), es campur (mixed ice with fruits), and sekotong (ginger-infused warm soup). It’s definitely my go-to for my favorite Indonesian comfort eats!

Sate Khas Senayan (Grand Indonesia)

Jakarta, Indonesia • Recommendation •

Sate Khas Senayan always satisfies my satay (skewered meat) fix! The Indonesian restaurant dishes out several variations of the local delicacy, including chicken, beef, and lamb. Each order comes with 10 sticks, perfect for sharing! I also recommend the Gado Gado (vegetables with peanut sauce and crackers) to start.
