Kenya - Safari trip

Safari Recommendations based on our experience on our honeymoon! 1. Most importantly get a jeep! Roads are bumpy and you will be in the car for up to 8 hours a day, you don’t want to get a bad back or stuck in the mud because of a two wheel drive car! 2. Get a good guide who knows how to drive, no joke even with the good car if you have a bad driver you will break your back. 3. December is actually a pretty good time to go, migration season is (June to sept) but it actually only involves one animal, the wildebeest. Other than that all the other animals are still there the other times, you don’t have to be fighting to get a look at the animals and you get much better attention from everyone. Literally every guide told us migration season is horrible, you don’t actually get to enjoy it.. 4. It gets cold at night and isn’t the morning, temperature is also extremely pleasant during the day in December! 5. We personally did not encounter many mosquitos, not like people tell you.. maybe it is the time of the year. We got like two bites over 9 days and it wasn’t even that itchy! 6. Food and water is pretty safe, we didn’t brush our teeth with it but we still ate salad and what not, and we were perfectly fine. 7. Find a good safari agency that takes cares of everything for you, we went with Safari Trails and it was fantastic. 8. Everyone speaks English, so if you are unsure about anything just ask. Remember to bargain and negotiate on souvenir/toilet shops, it is a tedious exercise but they love it. We usually go 1/4 of the price, but expect to end up paying 1/2 of the price. If you do plan to go to South Africa after, DO NOT buy anything in Kenya, you will find them much cheaper in SA... so we just found out. 9. They expect tipping for moving luggage (200 shillings) also bribing rangers can get you exclusive information to the animals! Guide wise we read somewhere that it is recommend to give 10 USD per day per person, judging by our guides reaction he was pretty pleased! It was one of the best trip for us! Couldn’t recommend Kenya more.

We stayed at one forty eight on the first night of being in Nairobi and it was absolutely delightful! The staff were extremely friendly and the house was beautiful! Plus dinner was one of the best meal we had while we were in Kenya! We originally wanted to book giraffe manor but it was already fully booked, got to say this was a great giraffe-less option! :)

So so so worth it!!! Not only do you get to feed them, you get to learn about the conservation work they have done for the endangered Rothschild giraffe! You also get to learn about the different giraffes like Maasai and reticulated giraffe and their habits to help you with the safari later!

Not one of the most popular safari destination, but we actually really enjoyed it! It used to be a cattle ranch and later became a conservancy. You can find all big five here, they are difficult to find but it’s part of the fun. The scenery is amazing and they have really good educational centres that has chimps and meet the rhino activities so you can more in depth information from the pros!

The Sweetwaters Serena Camp at Ol Pejeta was the first experience at glamping for us. The tents were very comfortable and luxurious.. showers were not weak and not great! However the view out of your tent and the restaurants make up for it! It faces a water hole where a lot of the animals will come over to drink! It was a wonderful experience, mind you wear more layers as it gets freezing cold in the morning!

We expected the least out of this park but got the most out of it. Lake Nakuru is beautiful and scenic famous for their flamingos and varieties of birds! They don’t have the full big five as the place can’t support elephants, nor do that cheetahs but instead we managed to find some amazing sightings of lions and leopards.

I completely forgot to take a picture of the room, but it’s a proper room and not a tent which is pleasant in the morning as it’s much warmer. Not much wildlife at the camp just a lot of birds! and a lot more people! The food is also much better compare to Sweetwaters at Ol Pejeta!

This was a spontaneous excursion on the way from Nakuru to Maasai Mara, got to say probably the least favourite of the places we went to. It was also a bit of a rip off, we had to pay additional 50 USD per person.. and you get this boat that doesn’t work very well, whole experience was 1 hour and you get to go pretty close to the hippos which is actually quite dangerous! I think if you are going to Maasai Mara you can skip this as there are hippos there too.

THE MAASAI MARA - dubbed the animal paradise! Animals that took us a day to find at the previous camp is a dime in a dozen here! Lions and cheetahs are everywhere, and super easy to find. Which on the contrary we didn’t really like, there are also way too many cars and people. Some shitty guides would even disturb the animals and interfere with them.. it’s overall too crowded and we weren’t even there for peak season or the migration. Having said that, if you are here for a short safari then this place is a MUST. You get all the big fives and most importantly the wildebeest which is where the migration happens (note that the guides all advised us that migration is actually the worst time to visit). You also get to do fun stuff like illegally entering Tanzania as they share the same park... so overall it’s still pretty good.

We stayed at the club tent this time, again forgot to take pictures! Lots more bugs than the other place, mostly beetles so not too much problem! There are a lot of small animals at the camp, like the cute dikdiks and damn noisy tree hyrax that likes to run on top of our tent all night. The food was really good too, we also did a hot air balloon ride through a company call Adventure Aloft which was really good. We even got to have breakfast in the wilderness with jackals all around us!
