3Set among the eastern rice paddies on the slopes of Mt. Agung, this former royal residence earned the name Water Palace for its maze of ponds, fountains and water features. The name 𝗧𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗮 𝗚𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗴𝗮 translates as "water from the Ganges". The first pond one encounters upon entering the site, is the highlight of the visit. The stepping stones winding among the guardian statues allow to take a tour of the pond and create vantage points to see the old carps swimming under the surface. Another pool further down welcomes visitors to take a swim. The springs that feed the pools are located not far away, gushing out from under an ancient bayan tree. The water, considered holy, is used in Hindu ceremonies. 👍This tourist spot gets very crowded during peak hours, so time your visit to avoid traffic jams on the stepping stones and the risk of taking an unplanned dip. 2You may know this very Instagenic temple for the flood of trick photos taken in it's Gates to Heaven, simulating a mirror-like pool, with the backdrop of an almost Fuji-looking mountain. Expect a 2h wait for the photo ops. Off on the east, sitting above the Belibis Hill, it's one of Bali's 9 key directional temples. It's known as the Temple of Thousands Steps because you will have to climb 1700 steps to reach the summit of the temple. Admission Fee: Free

3The most visited and photographed temple in Bali, and as such a bringer of mixed feelings. There was a time when Bali was not as insta-famous, and you could admire the full beauty of this rocky temple floating above the tide. A lazy stroll up the meandering streets lined with shops would take you to the many Warungs perched on the cliff, where you could enjoy a magical sunset while washing away the day's heat sipping from a fresh coconut. These days, prepare to elbow your way through throngs of tourists waving selfie sticks and scams and pickpockets galore. Armed with good timing you could probably still be able to feel the mystical aura of this temple, but only you can decide if it's worth the trouble. Originally named Tengah Lod ("in the sea"), legend has it that a travelling hinduist priest established a temple here for Baruna, the sea god. In an attempt to escape an attack by the local villagers, the priest shifted the enormous rock he was meditating on out into the sea, transforming his sashes into his guardian sea snakes. The rock and temple you see here today are mostly artificial reconstructions daring back to the Japanese colonization. 💸 It's common in Bali to be approached by locals asking you to take a picture with them on their phone (a rather awkward experience at times, but since it's happened to me in other countries as well, one I find hard to decline at times). Of course, pickpockets will take full advantage of this! Approaching you as an unassuming couple of tourists, while one will take the picture, the accomplice will stand with you in the shot. While you are posing, they will attempt to slash your bag and steal your valuables. 💸 When paying the entrance fee, carefully check your change the moment you receive it. Especially when there is a big crowd around, it happens that the ticket staff will "accidentally" get the change wrong. ❗ If you came without a private driver and are considering taking a Grab out, be extra careful of the taxi mafia. As with all touristy locations, when your Grab arrives, the mafia may aggressively harass both you and your driver. Walk a bit further away from the attraction, possibly to a side road, and ask your Grab driver to pick you up there. Admission Fee: 60'000IDR

The coastal town of 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗿 is mostly overlooked by the majority of tourists visiting Bali, despite the significant role it played in the early development of the island. Nowadays, the most notable thing about Sanur is it's port, where the ferries for Nusa Penida depart. If you ever get tired of the rampant jungles of Ubud and are looking for a relatively quiet beach town, Sanur may just be the place for you.

His small mansion has today been transformed into Museum Le Mayeur, hosting his collection of traditional Balinese artifacts and art pieces, as well as 80 of his most prominent artworks featuring his wife (a Balinese dancer) and friends, offering a glimpse into the world of olden.

For the thrill-seekers (and physically fit) visitors of Bali island, 𝗡𝘂𝘀𝗮 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗱𝗮 is the new ultimate destination. With beautiful beaches aplenty and fewer tourists, I would highly recommend a trip before while it's still mostly undeveloped. Various speed boat liners connect Penida to Sanur, most running 4 times daily depending on tide conditions. 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴! wear shorts and sandals, as you will be hopping onto the boat directly from the beach. In case of rough weather, the boat might not be able to land properly and 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 to wade your way back to shore! Gulp! In any of Bali's cities, you will be able to book day tours to Nusa Penida, but most will only cover either the west coast or the east coast. For the same price, we booked a private driver on KLOOK that took us all around the island. While the north coast has an asphalted road, the conditions in the south area were baffling, so expect longer commuting times and an extremely bumpy ride as your ride putters its way down narrow dirt trails in a cloud of dust. 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴! Because of the road conditions, I highly discourage you to rent a scooter. 3Brave the stairs, and golden sand and aquamarine waters will welcome you at Diamond Beach, where you can play with the waves to your heart's content. Nestle in a cute bird's nest for a very Instagenic photo or swing out over the waves (attractions require additional fee). 👍 This is a free beach with no lifeguard. DO NOT ATTEMPT SWIMMING, as the waves could easily wash you away. Stay safe!
